‘What’s it like really like being a Coversure franchisee?’ is a question we get asked by most of our prospective franchise holders. To answer it we spoke to Coversure’s franchise holder in Kidderminster, Frazer Lewis to get the inside story on being a Coversure franchisee.
How long have you been a Coversure Franchise holder?
And prior to Coversure, what was your insurance experience – you obviously had at least three years’ experience in the industry?
I left school and went to work in a local broker in Kidderminster. They were taken over by Swinton, and therefore I ended up working for them. In 1993 I cobbled enough money together to take on my own Swinton Franchise. They then pulled the plug in 1999, which led me onto Coversure.
What was it that made you decide to become a Coversure franchisee – the support, the agencies, the products?
Having had the experience at Swinton, in which the franchisor pulled the plug on the franchise side of the operation, it was important to me that any new venture into franchising was with a company that was not split between owned and franchised offices. By definition a franchise will provide you with more support than starting on your own, so this was important to me. I wanted to concentrate on sales, and allow Coversure to take care of accounts and provide back up and support in other areas such as compliance.
On a day-to-day basis, how supportive do you find Coversure HQ?
This has changed enormously in the last few years. Coversure now adopt a much more pro-active approach to helping franchisees, and we have far more regular contact with them than before. They actively want the individual branches to grow, and provide plenty of assistance and advice to us on a regular basis.
p.* Do they make doing business easier?*
They definitely try to take away a lot of the more administrative tasks to help us focus more on sales, so from that perspective I would say they do.
Would you recommend Coversure to other insurance professionals thinking of starting their own brokerage?
Yes I would. However, as with all things I think that people interested should look at all of the options available before making a choice. Compared to how it was at Swinton, Coversure are very flexible with regards to facilities and products, and if you have a particular speciality they would definitely look to help you make the most of that. I think that people considering a Coversure franchise should maybe think about spending a day in a Coversure Office to have a look at how the business runs on a day to day basis.
And what’s the one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting their own Coversure franchise?
It seems fairly obvious really, but most sensible things are. Surround yourself with good people. If you are starting alone, do not wait too long before bringing someone in to work alongside you. That will be a pivotal appointment as you cannot do everything. Bring someone in who will share your values, but maybe offer additional skills to what you have.
If you could sum up being a Coversure franchise holder in a couple of sentences, what would you say?
It provides a framework for you to flourish using the abilities you have to maximise the business opportunities out there. Within the organisation there are many different types of people, and having the opportunity to speak and discuss ideas and thoughts with them will definitely help a business grow.
