Can I still use the NHS if I have private health insurance?

One of the most common questions people ask when considering private medical insurance is whether they lose access to NHS care once they take out a policy. The short answer is no – you can continue to use the NHS for healthcare even if you’re covered by private health insurance.

Private health insurance and the NHS are designed to work alongside each other. Having a private policy simply gives you additional options and flexibility – it doesn’t replace your right to NHS care.

Using Both Systems Together

Choosing private medical insurance means you have more choice about how and where you receive treatment. But this doesn’t mean you give up your NHS entitlements. You can still:

  • Attend NHS GP appointments and use NHS community services
  • Access NHS hospital treatment, including emergency care and long-term care
  • Receive referrals from your NHS GP or consultant for NHS-funded treatment

Even if you decide to have some tests or treatment privately, you can return to NHS care afterwards. This flexibility means you’re never locked into one system.

In practical terms, many people use a mix of NHS and private healthcare depending on their needs at the time. For example:

  • You might see your NHS GP for routine care, prescriptions, or chronic condition management.
  • If you face long NHS waiting lists for scans or elective procedures, you may choose to use your private cover for quicker access.
  • After private diagnosis or treatment, you can still return to NHS pathways for follow-up care if needed.

This combined approach allows you to take advantage of the strengths of both systems.

It’s important to note that while mixing is fine, you can’t usually receive simultaneous private and NHS treatment for the same episode of care – for example, being treated privately and on the NHS at the same time for the exact same surgical procedure. But once one episode ends, you can switch back to NHS care with a new referral where appropriate.

Even with private health insurance, many people continue to rely on the NHS for:

  • Accident & emergency treatment
  • Long-term condition management
  • Maternity services and vaccinations

Private medical insurance typically focuses on acute and elective care – such as diagnostic tests, specialist consultations, and certain procedures – so the NHS remains essential for broader healthcare needs.

Get the Best of Both Worlds with the Right Cover

Having private health insurance doesn’t mean abandoning the NHS – it means you can choose the path that’s right for you when you need care. Whether you want quicker access to consultations and treatment, a private room, or more choice of consultant, private medical insurance gives you extra control while preserving your NHS rights.
