Coversure Ilkeston are honoured to be supporting local charity Ben’s Den in this year’s Aviva Community Fund. Ben’s Den is a dedicated children’s charity based in Ilkeston that was set up in the memory of Ben Parker, who passed away in 2003 following a battle with leukemia aged just 13 years old.
The aim of the charity is to support the families of children fighting leukaemia or cancer, by gifting them a free holiday and allowing them to spend much needed, quality family time together away from the overwhelming hospital environment. The first charity fundraiser organised by Ben’s Den in 2004 raised £11,000 and with this the Trust purchased a caravan at a Haven Holiday site – this was the very first Ben’s Den.
‘Providing a Safe Haven’
Coversure Ilkeston have been proudly supporting Ben’s Den for a number of years after discovering a mutual connection between their office manager and Ben’s mother. They have entered Ben’s Den into the Aviva Community Fund 2018 to try and raise £5,000 to assist in purchasing further caravans to provide a safe haven for parents to take their children.
Not only do these caravans provide a physical place of rest and relaxation outside of the hospital environment, the impact that it can have on mental health for the children and parents alike makes this an incredibly worthwhile cause.
Anyone can vote for an Aviva Community Fund project, and those with the most votes stand a chance of receiving that all-important funding. Voting takes less than two minutes, is completely free, and could make a huge difference to someone’s life. By visiting www.avivacommunityfund.co.uk, searching for the Ben Parker Trust Fund and casting up to ten votes, the project could get noticed by the judges and stand a real chance at receiving the funding.
‘An Absolute Privilege’
Commenting on their support, Sue Conway at Coversure Ilkeston commented;
‘It is an absolute privilege for us to be able to support such a worthwhile cause. Every vote makes a difference and takes us one step closer to securing this vital funding. When something as devastating as cancer hits, often a parent has to give up work to care for their child, which means funds for holidays are scarce. Ben’s Den enables families to prioritise spending time together without the strain for funding.’
Coversure Ilkeston: A History of Support
This isn’t the first time that Coversure Ilkeston have dedicated themselves to helping to raise money for charities. Back in 2014, the company organised a charity golf day to raise money for Breast Cancer UK. The day saw male golfers dressed up as women to play nine holes at the Ilkeston Golf club, and raised valuable funds and awareness around this important charity.
They have also recently organised a charity walk and fun day which raised over £7,000 for a young Derby girl. This helped to purchase specialist transportation for her, which made an invaluable difference in her day to day life.
