Following the Volkswagen emissions scandal of September 2015 and numerous health warnings relating to the levels of particulates that diesel cars produce - ones that culminated in the UK’s Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, calling for diesels to be phased out – the future of diesel fleet cars in the UK looks far from certain.

Autonomous or self-driving trucks were once viewed as a pipe dream. This is no longer the case. Following on from its 2014 commitment to make the UK a leader in electric and autonomous vehicles, the UK government has been testing driverless lorries since 2017. In May of this year, 25-tonners were put to work on the A14 roadworks in Cambridgeshire.

I love Hull. Hull’s been good to me. Since 2005 I’ve run a successful insurance brokers in Hull and it’s been my home for more years than I care to remember. When the city was announced as having been awarded the UK City of Culture back in 2013, I was chuffed to bits. The city had to see off bids from the likes of Leicester, Plymouth, Dundee and York to win - some of which were arguably more obvious choices.

Between Siemens’ wind turbine plant, Green Port Hull and innovative manufacturers such as Bio-D, Hull’s green business credentials look strong. Dig a little deeper, however, and you discover that despite such environmentally friendly organisations, Hull as a whole remains a deeply un-eco friendly city.

2018 wasn’t a happy year for the UK’s high streets and Hull wasn’t immune to this decline. Maplin, Sports Direct, Ann Summers, Peacocks, Toys R Us, in total 36 retail businesses closed in Hull in 2018, taking with them hundreds of jobs and local amenities. To some this is just the inevitable result of customers shifting their buying habits online. Others point to the cost of running physical stores – especially when it comes to business rates - while still others believe it’s just because these businesses have failed to offer what customers want.

Hull’s property market enjoyed steady, if somewhat unspectacular, growth in 2018, finishing the year up around 1.2% according to Zoopla. This is still 50% higher than that of the UK as a whole, which saw growth hit a 6-year low of just 0.8% according to the Halifax. Hull’s rental market also proved resilient with landlords seeing an average rent rise of 2.5%, way above the UK average of just 1.1%.
