As a tradesman you deal with a range of people in your everyday business. These people could be anyone from your co-workers to a member of the public, but what happens if one of these people receive an injury from work you have done? The answer could be expensive legal costs and this is when liability insurance could protect you from claims made by the injured person.
What does liability cover?
As a tradesman, the main type of liability you will require is public liability. Public liability insurance protects yourself against claims that may arise from a member of the public, this could be due to damage to property or an injury they received. Though these could both be accidental, having liability insurance in place could protect you if an accident does happen.
The other kind of liability insurance you may require is employers’ liability, this insurance could cover your employees from injuries that they may sustain from working in your business. If you have any employees then this cover is a legal requirement to the extent of at least £5 million worth of cover.
What is not covered by liability insurance?
While liability can cover you in a range of circumstances, there are some things the policy can’t cover:
- Theft isn’t covered by liability insurance and you will need to take out protection against theft separately, this may even be covered by the site you are working on so check with your site manager
- Poor workmanship is not covered by liability insurance, so if any damage or injuries are caused by poor workmanship you will not be covered under your liability policy
Have you checked your excess?
As with most insurance policies you will have an excess, you may need to pay this excess in the event of a claim. Increasing your excess could result in a cheaper insurance policy but if you have to make a claim you would be paying out a larger amount. It’s not always worth increasing your excess, so make sure you are happy with your excess amount when taking out liability insurance.
Should you get your liability in a packaged deal?
Getting your liability in a packaged deal could save you money. You can get a tradesmen insurance package which can include a range of cover, such as:
- Public liability – cover if a member of the public receive an injury due to your work
- Employer’s liability – required by law if you have employees
- Personal tool cover – cover for your hand tools
- Personal accident – income protection if you suffer an injury
- Construction plant – cover for your own or hired in plant machinery
