Claims
We are committed to ensure you are covered adequately and that all material facts are disclosed to the insurers. Common reasons to why insurers investigate claims and losses include the following:
NOT INSURED ADEQUATELY – Typically known as Under Insurance. For example you say you have £5,000 stock but you really have £10,000. When making a claim, the insurer will apply a principle of average meaning you will get less than £5,000
MATERIAL FACTS NOT DISCLOSED – For example: You say you run a Newsagents but recently decided to install computers and start an internet café. This is a material fact that needs to be disclosed to the insurer. Failing to do so will affect your claim.
CONTRUCTION – For example: You have a flat felt timber roof but the insurer is unaware of this. Again the insurer would require you to disclose this material facts as the theft and water damage risk is greater than a standard construction roof.
POOR MAINTENANCE – For example. If you do not maintain your property to a satisfactory level and a fire was to occur due to this, the insurer may either repudiate the claim or pay a lesser amount.
PREVIOUS HISTORY – Failure to disclose any previous credit history, criminal convictions, motor convictions, previous claims and additional terms applied by previous insurer. Again the insurer would require you to disclose these material facts.
We strongly recommend that you read your policy booklet and schedule of insurance to fully understand the terms and conditions contained within. If you are in doubt, please contact us on 0870 4585770.
CLAIMS PROCEDURES
Certain insurers request that you contact them directly to report your claim. In most circumstances a claim form is not required.
When contacting any insurer to report a claim, please ensure you get:
- The full name of the person you report the claim to.
- A claim reference number which is not to be confused with your policy number
- Full contact details of the loss adjuster if one is involved. Please note that loss adjusters work independently from the insurer.
- A telephone number for you to follow up the claim at a later date.
