- £200 donated to Uganda Medical Mission (01st August 2008)

“The medical camp in Jinja, Uganda, was a life changing experience and I can only humbly thank you for your support which helped make it happen. We saw up to 1000 patients/day split between 4 main tents. These were ‘Eye care’, ‘Dental’, ‘General medicine’ and ‘Paediatrics’ (Childrens Medicine). There was also a 5th tent from a local organisation who were doing HIV testing. The eye camp dispensed glasses as well as dealt with eye diseases.
One case which stands out in my mind was a very ill child who was brought in by his mother. He was rushed to a private hospital where the mission paid for the immediate blood transfusion needed to save his life. Patients were queuing up from 6am and having to wait at least several hours. Many patients also suffered from malnutrition and associated medical conditions. So we decided to provide food throughout the day, everyday, to anybody who had registered with us for care. It would consist of a simple but balanced meal and water. On the final day the Ugandan Minister for Health visited the camp. I can only thank you once again and hope that your support can be counted on in future, perhaps in person if not financially! Volunteers, medicines, equipment, glasses etc are all needed, so if you are able to help in any of these ways for future camps, please do let me know.
However, the work we did really was a drop in the ocean. We did see many people, and did the best we could for them but looking back there is so much work that needs to be done. Health education and setting up links with local schools are some of the things being discussed so that the drop may at least create a larger ripple. I am doing so to help end the devastating effects of Motor Neurone Disease (MND). By making a pledge on my behalf, you are helping to support those affected by MND as well as promoting vital research into this devastating disease. I have chosen this particular event having witnessed a work colleague, who only recently stopped work, suffering from MND. Not only do I want to help her, but also the many others diagnosed with MND. MND is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones. Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. MND kills 5 people every day in the UK. My goal is to try and raise at least £1,000 from the event”
