Office Insurance Claim

We have all heard that the recent high winds have caused chaos up and down the country. We ourselves had a bit of excitement the other day in the office when a sign came flying off the side of the building in the winds which flew across the car park damaging a colleagues car (thank goodness no one was hurt and it wasn’t my car). Well I say excitement; it wasn’t for the poor guy whose car it was and now will have an insurance claim on his hands.
We were working away like any other day when suddenly I noticed a lot of commotion and my colleagues rushing outside. News soon passed round the office that a sign had fallen off the side of the building and stuck an employee’s car. Naturally everyone wanted to make sure it wasn’t their car and have a bit of a nose. We were all relieved to find out that no one was outside at the time as it could have been a lot worse.
Turns out that there was only one car involved and it was a colleague of mine. Not much could be done at the time other than removing the offending sign and checking the others didn’t look like they were going to fly off anytime soon. Even so, at lunch a fair few that were parked near the building moved their cars to try to avoid the same thing happening again. Sensible move really, I would have done the same.
Later that day, I started to wonder whether he would claim on his own car insurance or on the Office insurance or company’s Public Liability insurance. When I got home I spoke to my wife who works at a local insurance broker and I told her what had happened at work. I asked her whether my colleague could claim on his car insurance or on the company’s insurance. She said that either would do, but to avoid affecting his no claims bonus, he such approach his employer who should have Public and Employer’s Liability insurance with their office policy. This way, she said, the claim will be against the company as it’s their sign and so their liability.
