Caravans are cool

Caravans | Cheap | Insurance | Cover

A friend of mine recently purchased a Hymer Nova 570 caravan and has been teased ever since. There appears to be a presupposition in our group of friends, that caravans are not cool. This may have something to do with the perception that the pursuit is only taken up by older people that own Volvos. David is not the sort of person that would be concerned about trying to find cheap caravan insurance with extensive cover such as European cover. In fact this was an impulse purchase and forms the moral to this story.

In spite of the ridicule David maintains that caravans are cool and in an attempt to prove this to me, he invited me and some mates on a European tour in his caravan. At first I didn’t fancy the idea, but then several other friends decided to go and with that and the promise of beer, I was persuaded.

The plans started in earnest and everyone was very excited about the trip. Despite the eagerness, the plans were somewhat short-sighted. We were more concerned with how much alcohol we could stow away without causing trouble at the border in Dover, than the more important, but much less exciting insurance.

Joe one of the more sensible of us questioned the insurance cover that David had. Well placed to comment based on an unfortunate past experience where Joe was on holiday in France and had his car broken into only to find that he was not covered. His car insurance policy did not cover European travel. Joe was right to be concerned. In his haste to purchase the caravan, David called up his insurance broker at the caravan dealer and quickly secured the insurance required to get his new pride and joy home. Unfortunately, his broker, thrilled with the prospect of a quick hassle free sale, failed to enquire as to his plans for the summer.

David called his broker and subsequently found that he was not covered for European cover and what’s more, his car wasn’t even covered to tow the caravan. Furious and slightly embarrassed David demanded the relevant adjustments be made to make sure the trip was covered. To add insult to injury, the broker charged an extra £200 on the premium.

Luckily the trip went ahead without any problems and everyone had a great time. David learnt an important lesson. Regardless of how boring and ‘uncool’ caravan insurance is, it is very important. Don’t assume that going for a cheap insurance deal will mean that you are completely covered. Explain your plans to your insurance broker and they will ensure that you, your caravan and even your car are properly insured.
